It is necessary across industries to have systems in place to make sure that you consistently meet the expectations of your customers and enhance their satisfaction. Adopting standards can be an important part of reinforcing that satisfaction by ensuring your customers receive a product that meets or exceeds their needs. For surge protection, ISO 9001 is an essential standard for ensuring quality, which is why we have adopted it at DITEK to keep the standards for our product high and consistently provide reliable goods to the end user. The ISO 9001 standard defines the requirements for a Quality Management System that when implemented, enables organizations to become more efficient and improve customer satisfaction.
About ISO 9001
ISO 9001 was first published in 1987 by the International Organization for Standardization – an independent, non-governmental international organization that boasts a membership of 161 national standards bodies. The origins of the standard can be seen twenty years earlier, with the publication of government procurement standards, such as the U.S. Department of Defense MIL-Q-9858 standard and the British standard BS 5179.
The most recent update is ISO 9001:2015, which sets out the criteria for a quality management system and is a standard to which a company, such as DITEK, can be certified. It can be used by any organization regardless of its size or field of activity-- there are over one million companies and organizations in over 170 countries certified to ISO 9001.
DITEK’s History with ISO 9001
At DITEK, we have found that in order to obtain maximum benefit from implementing ISO 9001 or any standard, its necessary to understand the reasoning for the standard and apply that intent in a manner that is beneficial to your organization. In essence, you get out of the standard what you are willing to put into it.
DITEK has voluntarily been certified to ISO 9001 since 2004, and has recertified to the two revisions made to the standard, once in 2008 and the current 2015. In order to first obtain and then maintain certification an organization must pass quality management system audits conducted by an independent ISO certified auditing firm. At DITEK, these audits are conducted annually and cover random processes of our system, and once every third year in which all elements of the system are audited.
Benefits of the Standard
This most recent revision of the standard has helped us assess the overall context of our organization and identify who is affected and what those people expect from us—from customers to suppliers and employees. With that knowledge, we were able to define our objectives and work in a manner of continuous improvement of our systems, products and processes.
The standard promotes the “Process approach” as well as the application of “Plan-Do-Check-Act”, which helps us ensure alignment of our processes and easy understanding by our employees. We have found this approach very beneficial when applied to our manufacturing processes in which we have realized an increase in productivity and efficiency, while at the same-time reducing costs and maintaining high levels of product and process quality.
Another extremely beneficial result of implementing the standard has been in how we identify and address both short and long term risks and opportunities associated with our organization, products and processes. These are key elements in establishing and maintaining continuity as an organization and aligning our quality management system with the strategic direction of our company.
By voluntarily certifying to ISO 9001:2015, DITEK has been able to streamline processes, provide high quality service and product, and address opportunities for the growth and betterment of our organization as a whole.
